Mazda's 2012 models have barely hit Manhattan Mazda's lot in New York, NY - and yet the Japanese auto maker teases a 2013 concept in front of us. This will be something new altogether though.
The CX-5, a small crossover lined up somewhere between MAZDA3 and MAZDA CX-7 still has an entire year before its ready to see production. Nonetheless, this reputable brand enjoys demonstrating their commitment to pushing forward for their loyal fans.
"The biggest outflow from the C-car segment (Mazda 3) is into the small crossover segment," said Jim O'Sullivan, President of Mazda North America. "The CX-7 is for some people a little bit too big of a stretch. The CX-5 will not be a niche player." O'Sullivan forecasts 2013's Mazda CX-5 will sell over 58,000 in the US alone, which would rank it as the number two selling model for this brand in the US.1
Mazda's Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine will come standard. This powerplant, when added to the chassis of CX-5, is expected to produce 162 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 155 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm.
Even with all this power, Mazda is committed to leading the class in fuel-economy, which right now puts them around 28 mpg city, 38 mpg highway estimates. Also, Canada and Europe will also receive a diesel variant.
